Be a part of a Central PA tradition and perform great works of the choral literature!

Concert Season

The Harrisburg Choral Society typically performs two major concerts per year, one in late fall/early winter, and one in the late spring. The Society may also perform smaller-scale concerts during the year, such as our March concert.

Rehearsals typically begin in early September and conclude with the spring concert, with a break during the holidays. The HCS rehearses at Camp Hill United Methodist Church in Camp Hill, Tuesday evenings, from 7:30PM to 9:30PM.

Member Responsibilities

Members are required to pay dues for each semester of the season (fall/spring). Members are expected to attend all rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and concert performances. Members are also expected to acquire their concert attire (all black; dress shirts, slacks, full black dresses, black shoes). Members are encouraged to help sell tickets to the concerts, and promote the ensemble through sales of concert program advertising space and patronage. Members are also encouraged to assist with organizational tasks and other volunteer opportunities (such as the Fundraiser Dinner or community singing events).

COVID-19 Safety

The HCS currently does not require a proof of vaccination declaration, nor will we mandate masking during rehearsals.  The HCS does ask our members to monitor their health, and to stay home if they are experiencing flu or COVID-like symptoms.  Read our current COVID-19 policy here.

Auditions

Members of the Harrisburg Choral Society are expected to be able to follow the music, hold their own part accurately when others are singing around them, and to learn music quickly. While we are a volunteer organization of non-professional singers, we strive for excellence and our audition process is designed to ensure that new members can meet the expectation of the ensemble. For the brief audition with our music director, potential members will sing scales and arpeggios to check which voice part is most appropriate. Additionally, they should sing an excerpt from a prepared piece, which can be anything from a classical work, Broadway standard, or America the Beautiful. An accompanist is provided if needed (please bring an extra copy of the music). Sight-reading will also be requested. Entry into the ensemble is at the discretion of the music director. After admission, members can be asked to re-audition to ensure that the Harrisburg Choral Society is the right choral ensemble for them.

Auditions take place during the first 2-3 rehearsals of a semester (September and January). Mid-semester auditions are considered on a case-by-case basis and at the discretion of the music director.

Non-Member Opportunities

Not a singer? Sorry, EVERYONE is a singer!
But perhaps you don't want to perform with the Society, but want to help us and be a part of our mission of bringing great choral works to the Harrisburg region? Here are some opportunities to consider:

Orchestra and Soloist Opportunities

The Society performs masterworks of the choral literature, and these works require the accompaniment of solo performers and orchestras. Over our many years the HCS has recruited some of the finest musicians in the region to be a part of our concerts, and we have a list of many individuals who are regular performers with us. But we are always looking for more talented musicians interested in performing with us!

If you are a vocalist with experience in the repertoire, or an instrumentalist with experience in an orchestral setting, send your resume and an introduction to our music director at musicdirector@harrisburgchoralsociety.org. Note: Soloists and orchestra members are selected at the discretion of the music director: Resume submission is not considered an engagement of a contract.

Join the Board

The Harrisburg Choral Society has, since its inception, been a part of the greater community of the region. Many of the supporters through the years were patrons or simply members of the community who devoted their time and expertise to the organization to help them further their goals.

The Society's constitution allows for non-singing "community member" seats as part of the Board of Directors makeup. The HCS has always strived to include non-singing board members as a part of our decision-making and operations team. Community members bring their experiences and networking to the board, allowing the Society to grow and become more financially sound and operationally stable.

If you are interested in being on our Board, contact our board president at info@harrisburgchoralsociety.org with a short resume and introduction. If you are affiliated with a current HCS member please include this information as well. Board members must be voted to the board by the general membership at our bi-yearly voting session at the start of our fall and spring semesters.

Be a Volunteer

Do you follow the Harrisburg Choral Society's activities as an audience member, or perhaps you know someone in the Society and want to support their efforts?

As a non-profit organization, we are always looking for volunteers who can help us achieve our goals season after season. Do you have skills in marketing, design, administrative tasks, or media production? The Society is always looking for particular expertise we can use for our operations. Contact us at info@harrisburgchoralsociety.org if you are interested in volunteering your skills.
